Newcastle has twice been named best university city in recent years, partly due to its affordable cost of living and legendary nightlife. Newcastle University recently embarked on a £200 million programme of investment in its facilities and campus. Voted 21st in the country, the university rates in the top five for postgraduate courses in civil engineering, cancer studies and town planning. Finding a job after postgraduate study in Newcastle
Newcastle was traditionally known for its role in heavy industries such as coal mining and ship building. While the service and retail sectors have largely taken over industry in the city, big multinational companies such as Nissan and AkzoNobel still maintain a presence in Newcastle, providing local employment in engineering and manufacturing roles.
In terms of retail outlets, nearby Gateshead is home to the largest shopping centre in the European Union: the MetroCentre. All the main retailers are here such as Next and Marks & Spencer, with some offering graduate training schemes in store management, merchandising and buying.
