Laura Watkinson took a conversion course in property so that she could start a career in international real estate.I worked as an architectural co-ordinator after graduation and through this experience gained a broad understanding of the property industry. The property profession offers opportunities that involve travel and using languages and seemed the ideal career for me.
I chose my course for its international focus - the effects of globalisation are becoming more apparent and it's important to understand valuation methods, legal systems and investment from both domestic and international perspectives.
I've learned much more in a year than I'd imagined. We have weekly coursework deadlines, exams at the end of each semester and work on an applied project or dissertation over the summer. Managing this workload takes self-motivation but it's possible to have a social life alongside study as long as you prioritise. I've enjoyed building friendships with international students knowing that we might work together again in the future.
I've been offered a job in European residential valuation - my future employer also helped me fund my postgraduate study. I'll value residential property in France, Spain, Italy and sometimes French-speaking islands in the Caribbean! My main aim is to have fun and enjoy the career I have worked hard to pursue.
Laura studied an MSc in international real estate at Oxford Brookes University.
