Postgraduate profile: MSc real estate investment and finance

Mark Curry took a property conversion course to begin a new career in commercial real estate.

I began working as a corporate lawyer in the City but after a year I realised that I was more inclined towards commercial property. I discussed my options with property professionals and human resources advisers, who advised how best to pursue a career change. I was told of a work experience opportunity at my current company, which I took and was then taken on as a 'non-cognate' graduate surveyor. I'd recommend talking to the relevant HR department if, like me, you're not following the traditional path.

My postgraduate course

My employer recommended, and is funding, my course. It covers specialist topics along with essential financial basics, reflecting trends within the industry. The course has developed my investment appraisal skills and ability to deal with property as a financial asset, so it has direct relevance to my work. Assessment is mostly via coursework and we're encouraged to complete the eight modules within two-and-a-half years, although there is a six-year time frame for completion. Balancing work and study is tough but manageable - I tend to study at weekends. In my experience, it's not absolutely necessary to be 'a cognate' to work in this field. You are more than able to catch up and get stuck into both the practical and academic aspects.

Mark studied an MSc in real estate and finance at the University of Reading.
