Steel structures are widespread in the UK and increasingly popular around the world; this specialisation prepares students for a structural engineering career in a vast international construction market.
Entry requirements
Minimum 2.1 Honours degree (BEng, MEng, BSc) in civil or structural engineering or other appropriate engineering or science subject; we’ll consider candidate's application for any course if they have appropriate professional qualifications and work experience, but a strong background in the areas covered on the course is required; applicants whose 1st language is not English require IELTS 6.5 (with no less than 6 in each component), or a TOEFL score of 575 with TWE 4.5 (paper-based test), or 232 in CBT with WTE 4.5, or TOEFL iBT score of 90–91.
Course modules
Core modules: dissertation planning and paper presentation; linear systems and structural analysis; structural design; computational structural analysis; vibration engineering; introduction to earthquake engineering; advanced concrete design; design of structural steel frames; structural analysis and design for fire; design project; dissertation (MSc only); optional modules choose 1 from: design of earthquake resistant structures; sustainable concrete technology.
