Summary Information

In this course students get specialist skills training, mentoring and support from leading game developers, the chance to design and build a working game that can be published and experience every stage of the games development cycle; training is scattered intermittently throughout the duration of the course; students are split into 2 groups: programmers and artists; both teams are set a brief by a games company to design and build a game for a console platform; with mentoring students work in teams to produce a simple 2-dimensional game in the 1st month, followed by 2 months for the next project (a 3 dimensional console game, before the final 6 month production period which utilises either XBox Kinect or Playstation 3 Move technology.

Entry requirements

Programming applicants should have, and be able to demonstrate: object-orientated programming skills, preferably C++; experience working with Windows, Mac OS or Linux API's; must be able to present at interview a game demo or design document for a game; a degree in computer science; mathematics; physics or related discipline is desired but not essential; games artist applicants should have, and be able to demonstrate: ability to draw (character design, environment design, concept boards); 2 dimensional and ideally 3 dimensional design skills; must be able to present at interview a game demo, portfolio, design document or application; degree in art, design, graphic, visual communications, animation or related discipline is desired but not essential.

Course modules

Within the training section of the course, students learn the fundamental skills used every day in the games industry; programmers are trained in: C++; mathematics; debugging; coding standards; source control; games artists are trained in: Photoshop; 3D Studio Max/Maya; Z Brush; Source Control.
