Our teaching is informed by the latest research and by the needs of employers. We offer a wide selection of graduate, undergraduate and 'conversion' courses in economics, finance, mathematics and statistics. In addition we also provide customised in-house training to various government departments and city firms.
The Department brings together research and teaching in economics, finance, mathematics and statistics in a single Department which creates significant inter-disciplinary synergies.
The success of this strategy was confirmed in the 2008 RAE (Research Assessment Exercise). Demonstrating just how actively engaged in research the majority of our staff are, over 90% of Departmental staff were entered, and 70% of the work submitted was ranked of international excellence (3* or 4*).

World class research
Higher education teaching cannot - and should not - be separated from university research. The research of our academics, many whom are recognised as world-class experts in their fields, feeds directly into our teaching programmes. As a student you can be certain that your tutors are actively working to extend the boundaries of knowledge.
The 2008 Research Assessment Exercise rated 20% of the School's work 4* (world-leading); 50% 3* (internationally excellent); 25% 2* (internationally recognised); and 5% 1* (nationally recognised). Over 90% of the School staff was submitted: 25.1 full-time equivalents. All, including mathematicians and statisticians, were submitted to the economics and econometrics panel.
All Economics and Finance Working Papers are published online and the Department of Economics runs a weekly seminar series.
The World Economy and Finance Research Programme operated research projects in 26 universities between 2004 and 2010; and CfC, the Commodities Finance Centre, is a forum for academics and practitioners working in the field of commodities modelling
We are also a member School of Birkbeck's Institute of Environment.
