We strive to provide the highest standard of training possible, using the expertise from the wide range of teaching organisations in the region to understand the demands faced by teachers and education professionals every day.
Our range of postgraduate courses and research degrees is designed to enable you to acquire the skills and attitude needed to be a successful teacher or education professional. Courses that are aimed at professional development will ensure your skills are up to date so that you can thrive in your chosen career.
Postgraduate study
The School of Education offers several PGCE programmes at Early Years and Primary level and at Secondary Education level which cover most areas of the curriculum. The School also trains those wishing to teach adults in the Post-Compulsory Education and Training sector. Further postgraduate study options include three Masters level programmes - the Masters in Teaching and Learning (MTL) currently aimed at Newly Qualified Teachers, an MA in Education and an MA in International Education for education professionals looking to deepen their knowledge of the sector. Our Masters programmes offer a recognised CPD qualification which may be used towards meeting your professional CPD requirements. We also offer tailored CPD to schools or consortia, based on our Masters programmes.
Research
The School of Education offers supervision if you wish to pursue research programmes for the award of MPhil and PhD degrees. Candidates may undertake research either full-time or part-time. Once accepted for an MPhil/PhD you will be assigned to a Director of Studies. At least one second supervisor will also be appointed.
You will be joining a thriving research community and be part of one of the University's research centres of excellence. The Centre for Research into Education (CRE) comprises 30 research-active staff with a range of expertise across the entire age spectrum from early years to higher education and adult learning. There is a focus on curriculum, pedagogy and creative teaching and learning processes. The research group works to understand and evaluate these developments and to support practitioners and policy makers.
