Cardiff School of Art & Design Cardiff Metropolitan University (UWIC) Art Schools are places of passion and vitality. They are places where great ideas are forged, as well as places of intense debate. Cardiff School of Art & Design (CSAD) is part of that tradition. At the heart of creativity in Cardiff for over 140 years, we are a leading Art School in a European Capital city and we are as passionate about Art, Design and Architecture today as we have ever been.
Our staff are practicing artists and designers and have extensive experience of working in industry; they are working at the leading edge of research in our disciplines and are experienced and committed to education. Taught postgraduate programmes cover the areas of fine art, ceramics, advanced product design and communications. These programmes are complemented by MPhil and PhD opportunities.
The School is host to a wide variety of exciting research and actively seeks to collaborate with academic and industry partners. We engage with cutting edge design technologies, engineering and material arts, as well as fine arts, and the history and theory of art and design.
Much of CSAD’s Art and Design research is conducted through the Wales Institute for Research in Art and Design (WIRAD). In the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise the art and design panel rated 95 per cent of the research submission as international standard, with 70 per cent rated as either Internationally Excellent or World Leading. World Leading research was specifically noted by the panel in the film photography and screen media, fine art and ceramics research groups. Using Times Higher weightings our submission was 12 out of 70 in the UK and the best in Wales. This significant achievement by WIRAD's founding members, UWIC and Newport, demonstrates very clearly the international quality of WIRAD's research.

Facilities
To match the excellence of our staff, we have a very wide range of resources and facilities. There are many specialist workshops and studios including those for painting, sculpture, sound, ceramics, print, textiles, graphics, architecture, and product design. CSAD has equipment that other Art Schools can only be nostalgic about; we still have a foundry for casting non ferrous metals for example. We have managed to keep the best of our history and have combined it with the facilities of the future; at CSAD you will find well equipped CNC model making workshops, digital music studios, audio visual labs and plenty of specialist digital imaging equipment too. The old and the new combine to make a dynamic and atmospheric 21st Century Art School. Visit www.cmu.ac.uk/virtualtours to take a Virtual Tour of all of our facilities.
