The Cardiff School of Education provides an educational centre of excellence. Located at the Cyncoed Campus, the School has over 2000 students supported by over 100 academic and administrative staff. The School is divided into three Departments, Teacher Education and Training (TET), Humanities and Professional Development. Together, these three Departments offer a wide range of programmes at postgraduate level.
The School is now in its 60th year of TET provision in Cardiff and the provision remains the largest in Wales and one of the largest centres for TET in the United Kingdom.
Many staff within the School are involved in the in-service training of teachers and other professionals. There is an ever-increasing amount of Enterprise activity undertaken by the School and its staff which all complements its core business of delivering high quality education and training. The Department of Teacher Education and Training offers Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) Primary and Secondary programmes, both of which include 60 credits at level 7 (Masters level) as well as school placements in UWIC’s Partnership schools. The PGCE Secondary programme contains 12 subject pathways: English, Maths, Science, Welsh, Modern Foreign Languages, History, ICT, PE, Art & Design, Music, Drama and Design & Technology.
The Department of Professional Development hosts a variety of postgraduate courses across a wide range of educational contexts such as teaching, adult education, nursing, youth and community work. A significant number of our students study part-time and are able to apply their postgraduate study to their professional development in the workplace. A number of our courses are endorsed by the relevant professional body and have excellent recruitment figures, with an increasing national and international reputation.
The Department also offers Masters programmes in Education, Leadership & Management (Education), Professional Practice (Education) and Mentoring & Coaching (Education). The department also offers a PGCE in Post Compulsory Education and Training (PCET); a Masters programme in Post Compulsory Education & Training; as well as offering an MSc in Management in the Community Professions.
Following the successful growth of the undergraduate programmes within the Department of Humanities, the portfolio of postgraduate programmes has expanded to include an MA in English and MA in English & Creative Writing.
The School engages in research that is at the interface of new knowledge creation and its application. Staff within the School have a wide range of research interests. As well as staff with established research profiles, a significant proportion of lecturers are undertaking higher degrees and developing additional research interests to contribute to the School's portfolio. The School also has Education research links with the School of Sport, School of Art and Design and School of Health Sciences with an interdisciplinary focus.

Facilities
Recent refurbishment has seen the creation of a state of the art bespoke IT suite, with dedicated interactive white boards and Apple Mac machines, set up in a modular format to assist group learning and teaching. There is a second IT suite with PCs set out in classroom style for more formalised learning. The School also has a Performing Arts Centre and drama studio; a dedicated Art and Design area containing ceramics and wood workshops and a computer aided design workshop. The school also houses fully equipped music and recital rooms and bespoke science laboratories.
The research centre contains a dedicated seminar room, with interactive whiteboard facilities and office space to facilitate full time and part time researchers.
There are on site library facilities where a good range of books, journals and on-line texts can be accessed as well as an inter-library loan system. In addition, there is 24 hour access to a dedicated IT suite within the library.
All students are provided with a personal tutor in order to ensure that the necessary academic and personal support is provided. In addition, all postgraduate research students are given access to free email and internet.
The new state-of-the-art Student Campus Centre opened on the Cyncoed Campus in 2009 and is home to the Student Union staff and bar and catering facilities.
