The Cardiff School of Engineering is a supportive and friendly environment in which to study and we provide the very best in facilities and academic support for our students. The School is committed to equality of opportunity and encourages inclusiveness and diversity. It has approximately 1300 students, and over 250 staff.
The School is unusual in that it is an integrated Engineering School which means that the main engineering disciplines are all contained within the same department. This makes interdisciplinary research and teaching a key feature of the school.
According to independent assessments the Cardiff School of Engineering is one of the top ten engineering schools in the UK for teaching and research. As you would expect from a School conducting internationally renowned, high quality research, many of our staff work closely with industry on a wide range of research and consultancy projects. Research students have numerous opportunities to engage with companies and to work on real industrial problems.
Postgraduate study
At the Cardiff School of Engineering there is a wide range of opportunities for postgraduate study. The taught courses range from core disciplines such as Civil Engineering to new topical programmes such as Sustainable Energy and Environment. They are carefully designed to enable the upgrading of engineering knowledge and skills and specialisation in a particular area and all are accredited by the relevant professional institutions. Programmes are balanced with a major research element and strong industrial links which feed into the teaching content and research projects. The School also provide PhD, EngD and MPhil programmes across the core discipline areas of civil, electrical and electronic, and mechanical engineering.
The School conducts international research of the highest calibre and in 2009/10 earned some £18 million pounds in research income. This research income helps to support state of the art facilities and means that teaching is up-to-date and takes account of the latest trends and research findings in Engineering.
Research
Cardiff School of Engineering is organised into world class research groups which focus on today's most challenging and exciting engineering issues, including nanotechnology, communications, medical engineering, sustainability, the environment, and energy generation and supply.
The School also places a strong emphasis on broadening your skills base and we encourage this by providing a number of dedicated courses here in the School of Engineering and at the University's Graduate School. This enables you to not only develop your knowledge and expertise in a range of areas but also to meet other postgraduate students from across the university.
There is a vibrant research culture with over 95% of our staff involved in internationally recognised research. In the latest Research Assessment Exercise (2008) the School consolidated.
Facilities
In recent years, more than £30 million has been invested in the construction of the Queen's Buildings, home to the School of Engineering. This includes a number of major infrastructure projects such as the Centre for Integrated Renewable Energy Generation and Supply, the Gas Turbine Research Centre at Port Talbot, the Structural Performance Laboratory, the Geoenvironmental Research Park, the Corus Centre of Excellence and the Knowledge Transfer Centre. The School has recently completed a large open plan flexible learning space for students so that they can interact with staff and other students in an informal setting.
The complex is close to other academic departments, the Students' Union and the City Centre. It houses outstanding facilities including spacious and well-equipped teaching and research laboratories. There is also an on-site recently refurbished library containing a broad range of books and journals, the latest computer and reference media as well as quiet areas for study.
