The Cardiff School of Health Sciences is a major provider of postgraduate education and research in Health Sciences in Wales. It is widely accepted that health care students are best educated in a research rich environment. The School has a vibrant research culture, with over sixty research degree candidates in disciplines across the School and our courses are informed by the latest research in the field.
We have over 160 members of staff, plus an invaluable team of specialist part-time lecturers, some drafted in from relevant specialist clinical areas for approximately 2,000 students from those undertaking Foundation Year to those studying towards a PhD.
Our postgraduate portfolio offers and exciting range of courses most of which are professionally accredited ensuring career prospects are excellent upon graduation. Courses on offer cover the areas of Biomedical Science, Environmental Health, Dental Technology, Podiatric Studies, Nutrition and Dietetics, Food Science and Technology, Health and Forensic Psychology, Health and Social Care.
The School is research active across all nine of its centre’s and has a wide range of ongoing enterprise activities. For example, the Centre for Biomedical Research encompasses investigations into cellular and molecular mechanisms of human diseases, their prevention and associated therapies. The Centre for Food Safety and Nutrition Research has an International reputation for consumer food safety behavior, food and health relationships and food industry focused research. Psychology research is well established in the School with specific focus on health psychology, forensic psychology and educational psychology.

Facilities
The School prides itself on the excellent facilities it provides for practical experience in your chosen field. This practical experience is so important to potential employers. Each discipline has access to appropriate specialist facilities from state-of-the-art laboratories for Biomedical Science to a pilot scale, realistic working environment in Food Science and Technology. We have development kitchens and sensory evaluation laboratories used in food, nutrition and dietetics and laboratories for Trading Standards, Food Science and Dental Technology. We have specialist clinic facilities in Podiatry and Complementary Therapies while Psychology has specialist computer laboratories.
We have invested development in these specialist facilities with the opening of a new £4.9m building providing for food technology and new product development, Environmental Science, Biomedical Science research and a postgraduate research centre. A Psychology postgraduate training and research space opened in late 2009.
