The Cardiff School of Sport, with its 60 year history, is a recognised centre of excellence in the United Kingdom. It has established a national and international reputation for the quality of its academic, sporting and research work and provides some of the most popular and contemporary postgraduate sport degree courses in the UK. The School has a postgraduate community of over 200 students and is committed to establishing itself as a research and enterprise centre to support the development of sporting excellence in Wales and the UK.
The recruitment of committed, high quality staff and talented students is critical to the continued success of the School. The lecturing staff have a wide range of expertise across all the major sport-related academic and research disciplines. Many staff are involved in applied research, consultancy and high level coaching activities which are directly relevant to and inform the modules that they deliver.
The School provides students with a setting in which they can achieve academic, research and sporting excellence in a supportive environment. Postgraduate programmes are available in the areas of sport coaching, sport body and society, sport development and management, sport and exercise medicine, sport and exercise science, sport management and leadership, performance analysis, physical activity and health, physical education and sport, sport psychology (accredited by the British Psychological Society) and applied sport psychology.
According to the results of the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise 70 per cent of the Cardiff School of Sport's research has international impact and a quarter was classified as internationally excellent or world leading. The university power rankings, calculated by Research Fortnight, based on the quality and quantity of research out-put, shows that the University of Wales Institute, Cardiff is ranked in Unit of Assessment 46 - Sport Related Subjects, as sixth in the UK and first in Wales. The university returned the second largest number of research active staff in this subject field.

Facilities
The School has specialist laboratories for teaching and research and dedicated teaching spaces that include the National Indoor Athletics Centre (NIAC); Performance Analysis Lab; Physiology Lab; Biomechanics Lab; Strength and Conditioning Room; and Physiology Research Lab. These academic facilities are complemented by extensive sport facilities.
All postgraduate students are given free access to the internet and email; postgraduate research students are accommodated in a dedicated research centre. The Cyncoed Campus houses and extensive library and learning centre and students have access to journal and electronic resources.
