A centre for Teacher Training since 1885, Edge Hill is the second largest provider of teacher training in the country and the largest provider of secondary teacher training. The Faculty's portfolio of programmes reflects the national drive to ensure that the highest quality professionals are working with the country's children and young people. Alongside its extensive package of initial teacher training programmes across the age-phases, voted best in the North West by final year students in the 2008 National Student Survey, is a comprehensive professional development portfolio for teachers, for those supporting teaching and learning and those working in schools and educational settings.

Postgraduate study
Edge Hill University is the largest provider of Professional Development courses for teachers in the country.
The Faculty of Education offers a range of flexible, modular award-bearing courses for those who wish to develop their knowledge, skills and understanding in the field of education. These courses are designed for professionals who are involved in education, as well as for others who have an interest in the theory and practice of education.
The Faculty of Education's Professional Development programme is managed by a dedicated team of specialist tutors, supplemented by additional associate tutors with up-to-date experience of working in schools and other educational settings
Research
The Faculty of Education has a very strong reputation in all areas of its teaching and aims to ensure that this is informed by the latest relevant scholarship, for example through the Sounding Edge project. There is a particular emphasis on applied research and evaluation of practice and the Faculty is at the forefront of developments in supporting school based research by teachers. The Faculty also contributes to the body of relevant scholarly knowledge through funded research projects and the work of its own staff at doctoral and post-doctoral level. The view of research is informed by Boyer's domains of scholarship.
Facilities
Our state-of-the-art £9 million Faculty of Education building, overlooking a picturesque lake, is the centrepiece of our Western Campus and the hub of our teaching activity. It features a 300-seat lecture theatre, five well-equipped ICT suites and 18 further teaching rooms complete with the very latest technology, plus a popular café where students meet to socialise and discuss their studies.
Further Faculty of Education facilities on our Ormskirk campus include the Natural and Applied Sciences building, where our Science and PE students make use of its excellent ICT facilities, a range of laboratories, prep rooms and a lecture theatre. The Mathematics, Art and Technology building includes three resistant materials workshops, an electronics laboratory, a graphic studio, a CAD CAM room, a textile and food room, applied art and design studio and two art studios.
The outstanding provision is not confined to Ormskirk, with further Faculty of Education amenities at our other campuses and outreach centres. The Woodlands Centre in Chorley is home to our professional development tuition and its Learning Resource Centre holds a wealth of texts and electronic services specifically focused on education.
