We are one of the smaller providers of the Graduate Diploma in Law (GDL) the Legal Practice Course (LPC) and, consequently, we are able to get to know our students well. We also provide many opportunities for you to be involved on pro bono work such as our Law Clinic and through our links with lots of local organisations like Reunite- an international child abduction charity. We are committed to providing strong pastoral care and have a personalised and specialist careers service.
Postgraduate study
GDL: For non-law graduates wishing to enter the legal profession. Either full-time over one year, or distance learning (including some face-to-face sessions) over two years.
LPC: Study full-time, with small group sessions timetabled over two days per week and the option of either attending lectures on a third day, or listening online. Alternatively, combine study with work or family commitments with the part-time course, where small group sessions are timetabled at weekends and lectures are online.
We have enthusiastic and committed teaching team with good local links. All lecturers are solicitors with a range of experience. Some still work in practice on a part-time basis.
Research
The School of Law has been committed to sustaining high quality legal research. Four main areas include:
Public Law: established strengths in environmental issues and developing into more specialised areas, including light pollution and environmental liability. In addition there is considerable work being undertaken in the area of Administrative Justice.
Criminal Law and Criminal Justice: key areas involve the protection of vulnerable groups including children (particularly in connection with internet crime).
Medical and Healthcare Law: Focus is twofold. First, the transplantation of organs and tissues, and the ethical issues surrounding this sensitive area and also legal responses to mental incapacity.
Commercial and Consumer Law: work includes; quality of goods and services, consumer remedies, risk passing in consumer sales, consumer remedies and limitation periods and consumer rights in relation to public services and unfair contract terms.
Facilities
The environment in which you study can transform your performance. At DMU we have invested nearly £200 million in recent years to provide the very best facilities, a first class library and learning zones, modern accommodation and a wide range of recreational amenities. Situated in a £35 million building which houses Leicester De Montfort Law School, the facilities include several large lecture theatres, break out rooms, a mock court, integrated law library, a client interviewing room and café. There is also a distinctly designed postgraduate and professional suite and the latest ICT facilities.
