Northumbria is justifiably renowned for excellence in learning and teaching and offering a ground-breaking portfolio of programmes at undergraduate, postgraduate and professional levels. The School focuses on law in practice and is committed to ensuring that students develop the knowledge and skills needed to become successful legal professionals. This commitment is demonstrated through our academic staff, the majority of whom have considerable and often continuing experience of practice.
The School provides an extensive careers and employability programme and its graduates are highly sought after by employers both regionally and nationally. The School's programme of clinical legal education has won it an international reputation.
Postgraduate study
We are a leading provider of the Graduate Diploma in Law (GDL) for non-law graduates looking to practice law and the Legal Practice Course (LPC) for aspiring solicitors. We are also one of only six institutions outside of London to provide the Bar Professional Training Course (BPTC) and we offer an unrivalled range of Masters programmes via a flexible distance learning mode of study, designed for busy professionals or those with personal commitments.
Research
Northumbria Law School's Postgraduate Research Degree programme provides an opportunity for graduates wishing to specialize in a particular area of law, studying for either a Master of Philosophy or a Doctor of Philosophy degree. The programme provides the opportunity to conduct an intensive piece of research in their chosen field, employing a range of research methods, as appropriate to the field of study. Our research centres are: Centre for Criminal and Civil Evidence and Practice; Centre for Legal Education and the International Centre for Clinical Legal Education and Practice.
Facilities
We are justifiably proud of our facilities. Students are taught by experienced practitioners in our award-winning, £70m state-of-the-art development in central Newcastle. The development boasts state-of-the-art teaching and learning facilities, with lecture theatres and workshop rooms equipped with the latest technology. In addition, there are specially designed courtrooms which are modelled on those that students will experience as qualified practitioners, a law practice library fully stocked with relevant text books and journals and student hub and social areas. The building also houses the School's award-winning Student Law Office, which provides students with the opportunity to offer legal advice and representation to members of the public and thus experience life as a professional lawyer.
