Master’s programmes in international Law – LLM and MA
The LLM in International Law programme attracts students wishing to begin or enhance careers in today’s global workplace. It draws a mix of students from all around the globe, generating a stimulating class environment with a truly international exchange of ideas. We offer a range of generic and niche LLM courses specializing in international law along with an interdisciplinary MA combining law with international relations.
Professional programmes – GDL, LPC, LLM in Legal Practice
The Oxford Institute of Legal Practice (OXILP) is part of the professional arm of the new School of Law. OXILP was established in 1993 by both Oxford Brookes University and the University of Oxford to specialise in the delivery of the Legal Practice Course (LPC). Widely regarded as one of the best LPC courses in the country, it is jointly validated by both founding universities and was developed in conjunction with top law firms and is designed to maximise your employability. Our GDL is a highly popular conversion course with students new to law who value the exceptional foundation it provides for a career in the legal profession.
Both courses are run in a friendly, supportive, 'collegial' learning environment, with plenty of opportunity to practise legal skills.
The LLM in Legal Practice programme structure is highly flexible and has the advantage of enabling you to gain a master’s level qualifying whilst continuing your employment as a solicitor. Alternatively, you can raise your recently completed LPC qualification to an LLM Legal Practice by taking parts two and three only.
"The learning environment was exceptional and I was overwhelmed by the high level of support from staff."
Research
Our LLM (Legal Practice) and our suite of LLM courses in International Law are underpinned by research being undertaken by staff in the School. In the most recent Research Assessment Exercise, the School of Law performed exceptionally well with 85% of research activity in Law judged to be international and 10% 'world leading' in terms of originality, significance and rigour. Consequently we now outrank many high achieving research universities in the UK.
Research is the foundation for excellence throughout our academic programmes and we include aspects of our research in all our courses, teach specialist modules in our areas of expertise and supervise dissertations in our specialist subjects. We encourage you to become involved through our seminar series, research centres and special interest research groups.
Research is fundamental to the School of Law, and we are able to offer several research degrees across different areas in the field of law. Postgraduate research students and students of the LLM in International Law are eligible for membership of the Centre for Legal Research and Policy Studies.
Facilities
The School of Law is located in Headington Hill Hall, a beautiful Grade II listed mansion dating back to 1771. Situated just a mile from Oxford's beautiful and historic city centre, the hall has extensive gardens for students to enjoy which command stunning views over Oxford.
The university library boasts an impressive range of legal holdings and electronic legal resources including Lexis, Lawtel and Eurolaw, covering UK, European and international material. Our dedicated law librarian will guide you through the huge range of information available to you. In addition to our own excellent libraries and resource centres, postgraduate students on our courses have access to the unparalleled legal holdings at the world-renowned Bodleian Law Library.
Oxford has much to offer lawyers and is known throughout the world for its heritage, its beauty and most of all as a city of learning. It is a key centre of debate, with conferences, seminars and forums taking place across a range of law topics within the university, the city of Oxford and in nearby London. Oxford has a thriving legal community and is attractive to many leading law firms due to its position in the Thames Valley and its proximity to London.
