Teaching: a job for life
The Institute of Education at the University of Reading is one of the leading providers of teacher training in the UK. Every year, nearly 1,000 students graduate as qualified teachers with an excellent chance of finding a job. Nearly 96% of PGCE students found a teaching job last year. With pay scales to match any industry, job security, an excellent teacher's pension and better work life balance, teaching is becoming one of the most sought-after professions of today.

Postgraduate study

Leading the Pack
The Institute is ranked first in training Primary School teachers by the Good Teacher Training Guide and is amongst the top ten providers in the UK overall. The University of Reading is ranked as one of UK's 20 most research-intensive universities and as one of the top 200 universities in the world.

Our postgraduate programmes include teacher training at Primary and Secondary school levels via both the traditional PGCE and the newer work based GTP routes. There is also an Overseas Trained Teacher Programme. We also offer Subject Knowledge Enhancement (SKE) courses in Chemistry, Physics, Maths and French. Our highly flexible and professional masters programmes are designed for both part-time and full-time students and include the MA in Education (various routes), Masters in Teaching and Learning (MTL) and the unique distance learning programme for music professionals, MA in Instrumental Teaching.

Our successful Doctoral Programme includes the traditional PhD and also the newly introduced Educational Doctorate (Ed.D) which allows you to pursue a research degree part time. A number of funding options are available.

The Institute is also a training centre for Early Years Professional Status (EYPS) and offers a number of Education related short courses and CPD within the UK and overseas.

Research

A regional and global perspective
The Institute has developed clearly focused and distinctive research themes which have made significant and widely recognised contributions to the study of Education. It includes work designed to promote world leading research while preserving the professional mission of a Teacher Training department with a local and regional role. Through our International Centre for Studies in Education and Training (ICSET) we contribute to the work of a number of prestigious international agencies, such as UKFIET and UNESCO and conduct training, research and enterprise projects on issues of global interest and concern. Some of our projects include ‘Creating Champions' in maths and science teaching in the Caribbean, delivering MA programmes in Oman and Kazakhstan, the European ERASMUS Programme for student exchange and staff mobility, the EU Lifelong learning programme, Chinese Headteacher training and trainee teacher exchanges with Sweden and Singapore.

Facilities

Reading: a world class university
Established as an extension college of Christ Church, Oxford in 1892, the university received a Royal Charter in 1926. Through its multi-million pound investment, it offers twenty-first century facilities and accommodation on campus while continuing to maintain its mature parkland and interesting mix of traditional and modern architecture. Students have a vibrant and lively town on their doorstep which is only 20 minutes from London and conveniently located close to Heathrow Airport, making it the perfect place to study.
