Securing a loan for postgraduate study

In reality, few postgraduate students get by without some sort of loan to meet their living costs or tuition fees – or both. Possibilities include career devleopment loans, the MBA loan scheme and loans from your own bank.

The Arts and Humanities Research Council

The Arts and Humanities Council (AHRC) was established on 1 April 2005 to replace the Arts and Humanities Research Board. As with the other research councils the AHRC is an independent Non-Departmental Public Body (NDPB).

Postgraduate funding bodies

Finding funding is often the biggest headache for a prospective postgraduate - a part-time job will not be enough to cover fees and living expenses. If you haven't got the cash to fund your studies yourself you will need to find some other form of grant or award.

The British Academy is the main source of postgraduate awards for humanities and social sciences in the UK. As with the research councils, applications are be processed via your intended university.

Government funding for postgraduate courses

Government offices can provide information on funding, awards and career development loans. You can also read more about financial support for higher education students by going to the Department for Innovation, Universities and Skills website.
