Established in 1884, Bangor University combines traditional academic excellence with cutting-edge research and equipment. Over half of the Schools assessed to date in the teaching quality assessments have received the top rating of 'excellent', while the latest Research Assessment Exercise (RAE 2008) has confirmed Bangor's status as a research-led university with an international perspective. World-leading research was identified in all of its 19 assessed subject areas.

Postgraduate scholarships
The University offers a variety of tailored postgraduate bursaries and scholarships throughout the year, allowing numerous opportunities for UK, EU and international students to partially or fully fund their postgraduate study. To celebrate our 125th anniversary in 2009, Bangor University launched a five year programme of postgraduate expansion. This continues in 2010/11 with further scholarship and bursary opportunities to be announced.
Bangor has a strong research base across a spectrum of academic disciplines engaging in research at national and international levels (RAE 2008). The University provides strong support for research activities including encouraging links with commercial and industrial bodies in the UK and overseas. The University also aims to be responsive to local and regional needs and is particularly conscious of its North Wales location and role as a research resource and a training base for Wales.

In addition, the Library and Archives Service provides access to information to accompany coursework, from essential textbooks and periodicals to e-resources, in addition to a wealth of specialist material. The University has numerous computer labs in locations across Bangor, allowing easy access to IT resources for all our students.
Bangor's spectacular location allows numerous opportunities for outdoor pursuits like mountaineering, scuba-diving and kayaking. Our main Sports Centre, Maes Glas, provides indoor facilities for a whole range of sports and fitness activities, including weight training, aerobics classes, indoor cricket, squash, trampolining and much more, as well as an extensive range of outdoor facilities from rugby and football pitches to an athletics track and a rowing club.

Work has begun on one of Bangor University's most exciting projects in its history - a world-class Arts and Innovation Centre set in the heart of Bangor. The project, known as Pontio (Welsh 'to bridge'), aims to connect the arts, technologies and sciences in a unique complex that also engages students, businesses and the local community.
