Cardiff University
As one of Britain's leading universities, Cardiff University is a major centre for postgraduates from throughout the UK, the European Union and the rest of the world. Founded in 1883, Cardiff has an international reputation which is reflected in the profile of our academic staff and cosmopolitan student body. The University attracts students from around 93 overseas countries and our thriving postgraduate community currently numbers over 7,600 students - some 29% of our student body.
The main University campus is located in and around Cardiff's magnificent civic centre. Academic buildings, student residences, the Graduate Centre, the Students' Union and the city centre are within a short walk of each other, saving you time and money on travel. A short distance away is the Heath Park campus, a multi-professional healthcare environment which shares a site with the University Hospital of Wales.
Cardiff University offers a variety of research and taught postgraduate programmes, including more than 200 postgraduate taught courses (full-time and part-time taught Master's degrees, postgraduate diploma and certificate courses), postgraduate research degrees (MPhil and PhD), a number of Professional Doctorates and an array of continuing professional development (CPD) and adult education courses.
Each year, the University offers a range of funded, competitive studentships to support postgraduate study. Funding opportunities are typically available in most of the University's subject areas. Awards can range in value from partial funding to full tuition fees support and awards which also cover living expenses. See www.cardiff.ac.uk/postgraduate/pgfunding for further details.
As a member of the Russell Group of Britain's foremost research intensive universities, ground breaking interdisciplinary research is undertaken in academic schools and Research Centres. This research is applied to produce real benefits throughout society both locally and worldwide. In the latest Research Assessment Exercise (2008) 33 out of 34 research areas submitted by the University for assessment by independent panels of experts were shown to be undertaking research that includes work that is "world-leading in terms of originality, significance and rigour." This research culture is underpinned by substantial investment to provide researchers - including two Nobel Laureates - with the facilities they need. The University is highly successful in attracting funding in support of its research and currently holds some 1,300 concurrent grants and contracts from a wide range of research funding organisations with a total value in excess of £400 million. Each year, 30% of research awards by value are won from the 7 Research Councils. These awards contribute to total annual research expenditure in excess of £130 million.
In excess of £200 million has been invested in recent years to provide students with modern and well-equipped facilities that create a first-class environment in which to live and study. Postgraduates at Cardiff benefit from a variety of new or recently refurbished lecture theatres and laboratories, state-of-the-art resource centres and comfortable study areas located throughout the University. The University has also invested in a range of provision specifically to meet postgraduate needs. These facilities include our own dedicated Graduate Centre which serves as a hub for taught and research postgraduates and is a source of academic and social facilities, as well as a centre for the broader postgraduate community. More recently, the University has also established Graduate Schools which exist to foster an intellectually stimulating environment where students are encouraged to share and develop research interests with colleagues from other academic schools and to feel part of a wider research community.
