Queen's University Belfast
Towards a world-class future
Queen's University is unique. A leader in innovation, research and education, it inspires its students - the leaders of tomorrow - to realise their full potential.
Queen's is built on a proud academic tradition stretching back over 160 years. Established in 1845 as one of three Queen's Colleges in Ireland, Queen's became an independent university in its own right in 1908.
Today, Queen's is one of the UK's leading higher education providers and a global force in research. Queen's is on a journey which has taken it into the Russell Group of the UK's 20 leading research-intensive universities in 2006 and to the Times Higher Education Entrepreneurial University of the Year title in 2009. Few other universities combine an international reputation for excellence in research and education with a student-centred ethos and a leadership role in the community which it serves - these are the hallmarks of Queen's.
Queen's vibrant campus is being further enhanced through an extensive capital development programme. Flagship projects, including the £50 million new McClay Library, the £45 million Elms Student Village, and a state-of-the-art Physical Education Centre, ensure that students enjoy a high quality and distinctive Queen's Experience. Home to over 50 student sports clubs and 90 non-sporting clubs and societies, students have ample opportunity to develop their interests or try their hand at new ones. Based in the leafy suburbs of South Belfast, Queen's students benefit from the low cost of living - 40% cheaper than Dublin according to Irish Independent in 2006 - as well as a massive selection of places in which to shop, party, eat and socialise.
As the UK's Times Higher Education Entrepreneurial University of the Year, Queen's has led the way in pioneering an innovative model of entrepreneurship education, which is embedded across the curriculum and encourages enterprise.
Researchers at Queen's, together with their international partners, are addressing key global research challenges. The UK's recent Research Assessment Exercise identified research of international excellence across all disciplines. Its research strengths are reflected in the award of four Queen's Anniversary Prizes for Further and Higher Education - for world-class achievement in green chemistry, environmental research, palaeoecology and law.
Standard full-time taught and and research fees for 2010/11 are £3,466 for EU students. While fees for the year 2011/12 have not yet been assessed, the standard fees for 2010/11 are an indication of the fees for 2011/12. A limited number of studentships are available for both taught and research degrees.
