Queen's University Belfast

Queen's University plays a pivotal role in Northern Ireland. For more than 150 years, it has combined innovation and excellence in teaching and research. Its commitment is local but its reputation is international.
Founded in 1845 as Queen's College, one of three colleges established in Ireland by Queen Victoria (the others being at Cork and Galway), it was raised to university rank with its own Charter and Statutes in 1908. Today, with some 23,000 students and 3,500 staff, Queen's is a dynamic and thriving 21st century institution which is one of the largest and most successful universities in Britain and Ireland.
Placed in the top 20 United Kingdom universities for teaching and researchout of more than 114, Queen's is recognised as being the most importantinstitution for university research in Ireland.
The 2001 UK-wide Research Assessment Exercise proved that Queen's produces world-class research across all Faculties. Research in 33 departments is rated as of national and international excellence and an impressive 16 units gained the top ratings - five and five-star.
The University consolidated its position in Mechanical, Aeronautical and Manufacturing Engineering, retaining its top five-star rating. Electrical and Electronic Engineering held on to its five and Civil Engineering rose from a four to a five, making Queen's one of the top institutions in the UK for engineering research.
In Humanities, English Language and Literature, Anthropology, Celtic Studies, History, Irish Studies and Music were all rated five while, in the Faculty of Legal, Social and Educational Sciences, Law, Politics and International Studies, Sociology and Social Policy, and European Studies, achieved the same grade.
In the Faculty of Science and Agriculture, Geography - Knowledge, Space and Culture - won the equivalent of a five-star and Physics and Archaeology retained their grade five.
And, in the medical arena, Community-based Clinical Subjects was graded as a five while Cancer Studies and Ophthalmology were flagged as conducting research of international and national quality.
This excellence in research mirrors the University's distinction in teaching which is also rated as first-class. This means that students at Queen's are being taught to the highest standards by academics who are also world-class researchers.
The University is committed to an ambitious programme which will see it play a leadership role in higher education in the United Kingdom, Ireland and beyond. In 2001 it launched a £150 million campaign which will transform the campus, and provide resources to invest in teaching, learning, research and development.
The options for students wishing to pursue a higher degree, either by undertaking a taught programme or through research, are plentiful.
Whichever option is chosen, students can be assured that they will be learning in an exciting environment dedicated to the pursuit of academic excellence and the spirit of innovation.
