Welsh government boost for student teachers

The Welsh government is prioritising funding for student teachers interested in working at further education colleges.

Burns re-elected president

Liam Burns has been re-elected President of the National Union of Students (NUS) at the union's 2012 national conference.

Times Higher Education World University Rankings released

The Times Higher Education world university rankings were released today, with the US dominating the top ten places. But 2011 sees California Institute of Technology (Caltech) oust Harvard from the top spot for the first time in eight years.

Oxford's vice-chancellor on postgraduate funding

Oxford University's vice-chancellor Professor Andrew Hamilton is warning that the government policy on postgraduate funding is threaterning research in the UK.

"...There is nothing in the UK that can compare with the US government's federal loans scheme, to enable graduate students to finance their study."

Cambridge holds on to top spot

For the second year running, Cambridge has topped the QS World University Rankings 2011/12, holding off strong competition from Harvard (Cambridge Massachusetts).

Several other UK universities have made a strong showing in the top 10, with Oxford University, Imperial College and UCL occupying the 5 – 7th spots.

Rounding up the top 10 were a series of US east coast schools; Chicago, Pennsylvania, and Columbia University in Manhattan.
