The Department

Birmingham School of the Built Environment is a modern, multi-disciplinary and diverse educational champion of the property, construction and planning sectors, offering courses dedicated to the teaching of future professionals.

Collaboration with industry is at the heart of our teaching. This enables us to keep our courses relevant, up-to-date and puts our students in prime position for industrial placements, provide opportunities to contribute to real-life projects and excellent career opportunities.

Our innovative collaboration with Birmingham City Council's Urban Design Team has provided our students with opportunities to gain work experience from placements, work on key individual research project, and gain invaluable technical application skills. This collaboration has seen our students win Council awards for their excellence and contribute to projects that impact directly on future council policy.

Postgraduate study

We offer a range of courses designed to give graduates the edge in professional careers in the areas of surveying, construction, property, architectural technology and planning. Our postgraduate courses offer professional accreditation from bodies such as the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) and the Royal Town Planning Institute (RPTI).

All of our courses offer a rewarding and enriching study experience. Our graduates are nationally recognised as people who can respond to the challenges of industry. Many become valued team players and, in some cases, leaders, taking excellent skills, knowledge and problem solving ability into their chosen industry sector.

Research

The school complements teaching, with its thriving research programmes that cover a wide range of interests, including; the built and natural environment, low-carbon lifestyle, smart and intelligent buildings, and environmental design.

Facilities

Located in the heart of Birmingham, we have fantastic facilities that support students from all levels of study including foundation, professional development short courses and postgraduate research courses.

Our well-equipped laboratories enhance students' educational experience, providing a bridge between theoretical learning and hands-on teaching to prepare them for a career in industry.
