Why study art and design at postgraduate level?

One of the main attractions of working towards a postgraduate qualification in art and design is the chance to be creative. You might spend your time putting together an enhanced portfolio or taking the opportunity to research your subject at an advanced level.

Art and designRecently, some UK institutions have started providing postgraduate courses that teach the core business skills required for a successful career in art and design, as well as the more creative skills needed in the world of art. For example, University College for the Creative Arts offers MA courses in design and strategy as well as innovation and brand management, while the Sotheby's Institute of Art runs an MA in art business.

The impetus for art, design or media students to have business knowledge is higher than ever and the UK is helping to show the way.

What postgraduate study options are available?

There is a wide variety of postgraduate programmes on offer in art and design - the most common are master of arts courses, which usually run for one to two years. You'll normally need a first degree (or similar qualification) in a subject related to the one you've chosen at postgraduate level, or be an industry professional looking to build on your experience.

Employment options

If you wish to pursue a career as a fine artist, you will have to work on a freelance basis, building a reputation for your work as you go. However, there are other options available for art and design students. You may decide to pursue a career as a designer for a commercially minded company, working on a wide range of projects. Designers can be involved in many different areas and producing many different items, from websites to furniture, advertising campaigns to magazine layouts.

Salaries vary widely, and ultimately you can expect to be paid according to your talent and reputation. Freelance artists or designers may charge a set hourly or daily rate. Often artists or designers will have to work for free or for expenses at the start of their career as they build up a portfolio of work.
