Why study engineering at postgraduate level?
Engineering is a very competitive sector. With thousands of students graduating every year, the industry as whole is relying more and more on the specialist engineering skills that postgraduates can bring. These skills help make companies' projects a success and employers are willing to pay a premium for graduates that fit the bill.
There are several types of postgraduate qualifications open to engineering graduates.
A masters takes one year (full time) and can speed up your route to chartered status if you have a BEng degree. It'll also give you the edge over graduates fresh from an engineering degree.
MPhil and MRes courses let you develop excellent research skills and are good foundation qualifications for pursuing a PhD or a EngD.
Engineering employment options
Engineers are at work throughout all industry sectors, influencing the way we live our lives. The sector covers everything from energy generation to aerospace and defence, product manufacture to transportation and telecommunications. Graduates can find employment with multinational companies, utility providers and manufacturing groups, as well as with governmental organisations. The roles available will typically depend on the company applied to: large organisations often run rotational graduate programmes, providing an opportunity to experience both commercial and technical areas. Smaller companies usually recruit into specific roles.
